Literacy

Reading and writing and the skills associated with these abilities are at the core of all learning. These proficiencies are the foundation for future academic achievement, and we cannot expect our students to perform well in other subjects until they have a firm grasp on these building blocks of education.

The Literacy Division of the Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE), through the state’s Ensuring Literacy for All Initiative, Early Childhood Education Programs, K-12 Literacy Pilot Program and Response to Intervention Programs, is centered on ensuring that every student in Louisiana, Pre-Kindergarten through twelfth grade, is a successful reader and writer. The Division is tasked with achieving five Critical Goals:

  • Students enter kindergarten ready to learn.
  • Students are literate by the third grade.
  • Students will enter fourth grade on time.
  • Students perform at or above grade level in English Language Arts by eighth grade. 
  • Achieve all Critical Goals, regardless of race or class.
