Enrolling Your Child in Louisiana's Public Schools

In order to register your child for school, parents should be prepared to present the following information to the school in which you wish to register your child:

  • An official birth certificate (children born in Louisiana will receive a 15-day grace period, while children born outside Louisiana will be given a 30-day grace period to produce a copy of their birth record.);
  • A record of immunization; and
  • An official Social Security card. If no Social Security is available, the student shall be assigned a state identification number.

In cases in which birth certificates or birth verification forms cannot be obtained, the school principal may accept another form which positively identifies proof of age, race, and parentage. It will be left to the local superintendent, subject to the authority of the school board, to determine whether a child can continue in school upon failure to comply with the enrollment requirements.

Please contact your school district directly for specific instructions on enrolling your child.
