In 2010, through Governor Bobby Jindal's leadership and at the bequest of district and school leaders, the state passed the Red Tape Reduction Act, which frees local school districts from certain rules if they secure a waiver from the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. Local districts seeking a waiver must demonstrate how the waiver will increase the quality of instruction and improve student academic achievement.
To provide districts and schools with assistance and guidance in taking advantage of this new policy, the Department has identified policy waiver, program support, and partnership opportunities that districts may choose to pursue based on the letter grade their schools earn. It is important to note, however, that schools and districts may take advantage of any of these supports and waivers regardless of their performance.
